microsoft corp.a lawsuit has been filed and is seeking class action status against the computer company for allegedly misleading consumers about windows vista.
the lawsuit was filed in us district court in seattle and alleges people bought "vista capable" machines assuming they would be able to run all the windows vista features such as aero glass, flip3d, and the media center interface.
Wow. I got the "whatever" comment from somebody because I made a perfectly reasonable, correct, and logical argument. I'm honored. That only happens here when you are iron-clad correct and you catch somebody with their pants down.
On another note....
TD, I agree with you and understand what you are saying. However, that isn't the point of this lawsuit or this thread. The point of this lawsuit is about noobs who walk into Best Buy, without doing the right research, and don't understand what the term "capable" means before buying a new comp., and/or upgrading the OS without knowing what they are doing. And then trying to hold someone else responsible for their mistake.
It isn't about businesses buying new machines and all of the associated problems that go along with new OS releases. That's what IT deparments are for (I'm in IT like you, so you know we're on the same page as far as that goes - you're preachin' to the choir on that suff). The problem of how businesses that need new machines are going to deal with Vista is valid. However, my take is that if business really need new machines at this time and Vista is the only choice, they need to be going with large manufacturers who have the resources to put out machines with Vista compatible drivers for the installed hardware. If I need 50 new machines right now, I'm not going down to Joe's Computer Shack and buying comps that his pimply faced son built. I'm going to call up HP (or similar) and get their business class machines that are tested to work with Vista Business edition. I don't know that realistically there are heaps and mounds of businesses anyway that have directly connected periphs (as opossed to networked resources) where Vista driver availibility is going to be a huge issue. Either the machine runs Vista or it doesn't - my networked printers/NAS/whatever don't care what the OS is that is trying to hit it. But again, I do agree that specialized businesses with specialized hardware are going to have trouble.

As far as the word processing thing mentioned by one poster (typing letters? - I'm guessing word processing here)...well that doesn't have anything to do with the OS and never has. MS office doesn't come with Vista - in any version- and it didn't come with XP, 2000, NT, ME, 98, etc., etc. Upgrading to Vista Ultimate from Visa Basic won't fix your problems. You need to buy MS Office just like everybody else. Or use Open Office. It's free and has become quite robust in most of its parts. It is true that many times when you buy a new computer they (the computer manufacturer) will throw in MS Works which includes MS Word, but they don'thaveto. This isn't a Vista issue.
No offense, but you have made my point about users not knowing enough about computer these days. This is a "distinguish between the operating system and the installed applications" type of question you would get in a very basic, entry level computing class. Or hell, just the guy in the blue shirt at Best Buy could tell ya that to. Just got to ask questions first. Thus my original comment that people need to keep up on their computing knowledge or get left behind anymore. Please don't misunderstand, I understand why you are confused about that issue, but still, it isn't Microsoft's fault there. I also don't think anybody needs to be a computer geek to understand any of these issues that are going on here. My 80 year old mom woulda' given you the same answer (in her own way) as to why the OS doesn't have a built in application suite. She is, without a doubt, not a computer geek. Without a doubt. Heh.
If you do want to get Open Office, which, as I mentioned is free, just google it and download the appropriate version for whatever operating system you have. The word processor and spread sheet modules are very good. The other modules are in various stages from being usable to sucking bad. But hey, it's free. I can help you with finding it if you want me to or have questions.

I would settle for Microsoft to furnish those of use that were forced to have Vista, a free XP disc.
Interesting. If you mean that somebody from MS came to your house with a gun and made you buy Vista, install it, and get rid of a previous XP install, then er...that doesn't happen. Nobody forces you to do much of anything. If you mean that you bought a new machine and Vista was pre-installed, then either the machine is Vista ready - in which case you have all the features - or, the machine is Vista capable - in which case you didn't lose anything anyway vs. XP since XP doesn't have Aero effects. You can always use a free distro. of Linux (heck, I'll even help you pick one) if you would rather not have a company do what all companies do - make money. MS is just very, very good at it.

I'm only 17,
This has nothing to do with the topic. I just wanted to say, LtCmd.lore, I am impressed with your keen intellect and reasoning ability at such a young age. I predict you will go very far in life.

Hi WAC,
Interesting development. I wonder though, how different this is from any other software company. For instance, if you go out and buy a new game - hell, I don't know what's new - but for the sake of argument, Doom, and you read on the box what the recommended reqs are, that still doesn't mean that you get to run the game to its fullest; just mostly.
I don't agree that running Vista without Aero makes it stripped down (in reality, what is intended by that remark is that it is somehow crippled - it isn't though). After all, the OS is perfectly functional without Aero effects on. It just isn't as pretty. OK, the flip thing is broken without Aero on, but you get my point.
Before I started caring too much about Vista, I had noticed that there are two labels being put on computers; Vista capable and Vista ready. I assumed (correctly) that that means just what they say. Vista ready means everything works, and capable means it mostly works, but not all the way. The specs. for running Vista are not top secret - they are pretty easy to find. I can live with that.
I am by no means a Windows apologist. However, I am realistic about computers. They are not forget and go devices like ovens. A person has to take the effort (or pay someone who will) to research the subject and make proper decisions. This is the world we live in and people will have to be willing to educate themselves on technology or simply be left behind.
Actually the best thing that I think that could happen in this instance is for the judge to say f88k off to the prosecution and sentence the computer noobs that want to stick it to MS to basic computing classes at their local community colleges.
as some of you know, my daughter has been diagnosed with bi-polar disorder.
its been years of dealing with it, until a proper diagnosis, plus she has addictions....alcohol and drugs.
she did get approved for disability and just now has medical benefits.
Hey purps, I haven't time to read all the posts today, but I do want to say that I'm bi-polar type 2 and I'd be glad to share any thoughts with you. Feel free to pm me and/or also wifey (exwitless) if you want her take on how to live with somebody with bi-polar.
There was a lithium thread recently that had good info (sift through it though, there is some flat out wrong info that gets spread around about bi-polar disorder). I would check that thread out.
Also, please, please make sure that the diagnosis is correct as to the type of bi-polar disorder. Type 1 is very different from type 2 and they take completely different meds to treat. Many times an md will not have the knowlege to tell the difference and it is best to go to a shrink instead. If a med that is good for type 1 is prescribed for somebody with type 2, the results can be disasterous.
Hang in there.

even though you might think it's painfully obvious, explain why you chose your avatar and/or username.
it could help us faceless "netizens" get to know each other a little better.
open mind.
Little Drummer Boy because I was a good drummer in a band before I got into the borg. Having to stop making music with a band was like ripping my guts out. I decided to go with LDB because it is a Christmas character who is a drummer and I get to celebrate Christmas again.
edit to say: I did have a pic of the LDB from the show up at first but I got tired of it. Now I kinda just use whatever avatar I'm in the mood for.

HI Vinny!
Posts of the enormously vast magnitude like the one being described as an avalanche, may not be the best way to get your point across. It is true that such an important subject does deserve more than a few casual sentences thrown together (for the most part). However, the reader may not choose to invest 15-20 minutes reading a single posting on a fast moving thread with many posters taking part. If you found a more reasonable middle ground length (and tone) of post, I'm sure the results would be more positive. As it stands, I have been ignoring your posts when they grow to such lengths. (My reason is that I find them to be inconsiderate when they are so long, so I won't help validate them by reading them.)
As a prime exmple of how "less is more", I invite you to examine many of the posts made by LittleToe. Some of his posts consist of one or a few brief thoughs that carry volumes of information and layers of hidden meaning.
I hope that helps in some way.
